Students will work collaboratively in groups of 3-4 to research the history, economy, and natural resources that pertain to Mackinac Island. Before embarking on this exciting journey up north, I will explain to the students the importance of finding not only a variety of sources when researching a topic, but also making sure that the sources are credible.
The students will research this small island just below the Upper Peninsula. They will need to gather information specifically pertaining to the history, present economy and natural resources, but they will also need to collect data such as charts, graphs, photographs, and any other visual that will aid in their exploration.
This online experience will teach students how to work collaboratively in groups, how to research a topic using a variety of resources, and how to synthesize their information through online programs (such as a newsletter or website). Prior to this lesson, the students will be expected to know how to use one of these online websites, though there will be a brief tutorial for students who need a refresher.
