Overview:

This Moodle course is designed for a middle school science class. this course takes students through a brief review of the states of matter, introduce ideas of properties of matter, and identification of physical and chemical changes in matter.

Students will complete a series of activities in this course, including self-assessments, pre-and-post-tests, interactive games, and videos.

Standards and Objectives:

Throughout this course, students will be improving their understanding of matter and its properties, and classifying changes in matter. This course follows the Next Generation Science Standards for Middle School Students, and more specifically covers the following standards:

  • MS-PS1-2: Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
  • MS-PS1-4: Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substancewhen thermal energy is added or removed.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define chemical and physical changes
  • Name examples of physical and chemical changes
  • Differentiate between physical and chemical changes
  • Describe characteristics of a piece of matter
  • Make detailed observations
  • Gather data based on observations
